An investigation of a particular site revealed a 4m thick deposit of peat overlying a deposit of soft clay. A 150 mm diameter by 300 mm long sample taken from the peat deposit was weighed and found to have a total mass of 5036 g and after oven-drying a dry mass of 387,4 g.

a) If the partical specific gravity of the peat is 1.43 ,calculate the bulk density,water content ,void ratio ,degree of saturation and air voids content of the peat deposit.

b) Calculate the respective thickness of the soild phase ,water phase and air phase.
