1. The outside diameter of the steel pipe shown in the following figure is 4.5 in and has a wall thickness of 0.25 in. The pipe supports the loads shown in the figure.
a) Calculate the internal forces and moments acting on the right half of a cut at a plane 24 in from the tip of the cantilever for the loading shown. Use the coordinate system indicated below (positive in the labelled direction) and the right-hand-rule to indicate the direction (positive or negative) of the forces and moments. Include units in your answers in the table below.
b) Write the equation you would use to calculate stress (at any point on the cross-section) due to each of the internal forces. No calculations are required. Make sure you:
- actually use the force/moment in the equation
- indicate the appropriate axis for the stress with subscripts (e.g. if it is normal stress in the z direction, make sure you write sigma z or if it is shear stress on the z face in the x direction, make sure you write tau zx)
- indicate the appropriate axis for moment of inertia with subscripts (e.g. if the moment of inertia about the x axis is required, make sure you write lx in the equation).
In a falling-head permeability test the initial head of 1.5m dropped to 0.5m in 4 h the diameter of the standpipe being 5mm. The soil specimen was 200mm long by 100mm in diameter.
In determining the difference between points A and B, the inclined distance was measured to be 157.65 ft. The transit was set u on point A. The height of its transverse axis was 5.2 ft about point A
As a highway patrol officer, you are patricipating in a speed trap. A car passes your patrol car which you clock at 55 mph. One and a half minutes later, your partner in another patrol car situated two miles away from you, clocks the same car at 5..
A bar with a circular cross-sectional area is made of SAE 1045 carbon steel having a yield stress of sY = 1000 MPa. The bar is subjected to a torque T=3.75 kNm and a bending moment M=7 kNm. Using a factor of safety FS=2 with respect to yielding
Three loads P1 = 2.4 kN, P2 = 4.4 kN, and P3 = 6.4 kN are suspended as shown from the cable ABCDE. Knowing that the maximum tension in the cable is 26 kN, determine the distance dC.
A machine costs $20,000 and has a 5-year useful life. At the end of the 5 years, it can be sold for $4,000. If annual interest is 8%, compounded semiannually, what is the equivalent uniform annual cost of the machine
A 0.5 m diameter concrete pipe (5.0 cm wall thickness with rigid pipe walls) carries water 600 m before discharging it into another reservoir. The surface elevation of the downstream resevoir is 55 m lower
A spherical pressure vessel has an inner diameter of 2 meters and athickness of 10 mm. A strain gauge having a length of 20 mm is attached to it, and it isobserved to increase in length by 0.012mm when the vessel is pressurized.
Assume that theta is given in degrees, and write the MATLAB statements to evaluate tan(theta) as long as the magnitude of cos( theta) is grater than or equal to 10^(-20). If the magnitude of cos(theta) is less than 10^(-20)
Find the reactions - draw the shear diagram and draw the moment diagram
Roof trusses such as the one shown are spaced 6 m apart in a long, rectangular building. During the winter, snow loads of up to 1 KN/m^2 (or 1 KPa) accumulate on the central portion of the roof. Find the force in each member for a truss not at the..
A long line of burning agricultural waste emits 0.3 g/m/s of particulate matter on a clear fall afternoon with winds blowing 3 m/s perpendicular to the line. Estimate the ground-level particulate concentration 400 m downwind from the line.
