The vapor pressure of a substance describes how readily molecules at the surface of the substance enter the gaseous phase. At the boiling point of a liquid, the liquid's vapor pressure is equal to or greater than the atmospheric pressure exerted on the surface of the liquid. Since the atmospheric pressure at higher elevations is lower than at sea level, the boiling point of water decreases as the elevation increases. The atmospheric pressure at sea level is 760 mmHg. This pressure decreases by 19.8 mmHg for every 1000-ftincrease in elevation.
The boiling point of water decreases 0.05°C for every 1 mmHg drop in atmospheric pressure.
What is the boiling point of water at an elevation of 7000ft ?
Draw the ideal distillation curve for a 50:50 mixture of two miscible liquids. How do you achieve ideal distillation
Add 28 ml of water and 1.0 ml of concentrated hydrochloric acid to the erlenmeyer flask.), but otherwise followed the above procedure. The student obtained _no product. Explain why?
Calcium in blood or urine can be determined by precipitation as calcium oxalate CaC2O4. The precipitate is dissolved in strong acid and titrated with potassium permanganate. The products of the reaction are carbon dioxide and Manganese ii ions.
An engineer is designing a chlorine contact chamber to disinfect poultry-processing wastes. (Note these wastes are often contaminated with the pathogenic bacteria Salmonella). She can design the system to use chlorine gas (equivalent to using HOCl..
The following molecular equation represents the reaction that occurs when aqueous solutions of silver nitrate and calcium chloride are combined.
