Tesla, Inc. could probably have one of the biggest potentials for a legal liability with its autonomous driving technology and potential accidents or malfunctions leading to injury or death. Tesla's Autopilot and Full Self-Driving (FSD) systems, while technologically advanced, have drawn scrutiny from regulators, the media, and the public due to several high-profile accidents that occurred while these systems were reportedly engaged. The number of deaths and accidents linked to Tesla's Autopilot system is higher than what was earlier reported: 17 deaths and 736 accidents have occurred since 2019 (Blanco, 2023). Imagine a situation where a Tesla car, with the FSD system engaged, misunderstands a traffic scenario (e.g., misinterprets traffic light signals or fails to recognize roadwork signs) and causes a multi-car accident, leading to injuries or fatalities. The possible legal action could be the affected individuals, or their families might sue Tesla, alleging the system is faulty. This could lead to substantial liability if it is determined that the system had a defect or if it was marketed in a way that misled consumers about its capabilities.
