Several years ago, two people died and a third was maimed after receiving excessive radiation from a medical machine. It was only after the second incident that the problem was located-a bug in the software that controlled the machine. Consider the possible consequences of software failure in situations where life is at stake, and then respond to the following:

(a) Are there situations when software bugs are unethical? Explain your answer.

(b) What responsibility does a programmer have in situations where a program fails in the ?eld? What about the software company he or she works for? Does the consumer share any responsibility? Justify your answers.
