Go to a department or clothing store in person or to an online retailer and examine the children’s and teen's clothing sections. Analyze the messages related to gender by answering the following questions. Be sure to fully explain and support your answers.
1. Where did you observe? Include in your answer the date, time, place, description, and other general details for your observation.
2. What differences do you see between the boys’ and girls’ sections? For instance you may want to discuss what differences you see in terms of the space itself, how the clothing looks and is made to be worn, and the imagery and text on the clothing.
3. What messages about gender are being sent to boys? To girls? Be sure to examine what these differences say about being a girl or boy. For instance, if the girls' section contains a lot of pink and light colored clothing, don't just say the message sent is that girls like pink...dig deeper!
4. Are the differences in messaging based on sex differences or gender differences between boys and girls? How so?
5. Do these messages about gender and the difference between the messages to boys and girls matter? What effect might they have on children's gender socialization and society more widely?
