FROM THE NORTH, SOUTH, EAST & WEST, 1865-1914 (WWI). BACKGROUND: More foreign immigrants (approximately 14 million) came to Northern industrial cities than in any voluntary migration in world history. Unlike today, there were more industrial jobs than workers. Foreign immigrants and Americans alike found factory jobs easily. Most were European peasants who came with only limited, agricultural job skills. Like today, few spoke English, or knew anyone in America.
