Chi square compares actual data with expected data. What would the expected data be? For example, if I know the percentage of brown M&Ms in a bag is 40% set by the company, but I open up a bag that is 50% brown M&Ms, I could run a chi square to see if there is a significant difference. This might lead the company to see that something is wrong with the packaging at the particular facility.
