Assignment:
1. The increase of attention given to the victims of crime by the law, courts, and the public over the last few decades has resulted in an increase of the application of the criminological theories to victims. In a way, that is a logical development because only theorizing about offenders ignores the fact that victims are also part of the dynamics of crime. There is a delicate balance that must be maintained. Blaming victims is not appropriate but it is appropriate to understand the role that victims have in a criminal event.
Find at least one scholarly or professional article concerning routine activity theory. Provide a summary of the article(s) AND your analysis of the information in the article(s)
2. A crime is committed by someone motivated to commit the crime against a victim at a suitable place. Sometimes the victim goes to the place willingly (such as a bar where it is generally known that fights occur) but other times the person committing the crime may seek out a suitable place (such as a house that does not have alarm system). How much influence does a place have on emboldening a potential offender? Upscale department stores have more money in the cash register than convenience stores and yet convenience stores are more victimized by robbery.
Find at least one scholarly or professional article concerning the places of crime. Provide a summary of the article(s) AND your analysis of the information in the article(s).
3. Crime does not occur equally across a geographic area and not all categories of citizens are victimized equally. The lifestyles of some people put them at risk of being victimized. It may be where they live, where they go for recreation, the time of day they are out in public, or where they work. It is a contradiction that those who fear crime the most (women and the elderly) are not as victimized as young males. Instead of considering why young males are victimized, we should consider why women and the elderly experience less victimization. Reducing crime could involve raising males differently so they are less prone to commit crimes and be victims.Find at least one scholarly or professional article concerning lifestyle theory.
4. It does not happen as often as most people believe, but when it does happen a school shooting dominates the news and the thoughts of the public. Schools have historically been, and still are, places of safety for children. Schools are not free of crime, but the crimes are more likely to be physical assaults and thefts than shootings. Although shootings do obviously occur and there is a general understanding about the dynamics of shootings, the understanding is lifted from the media.
