The weights (in grams) of four different colors of M&M candies are given below, along with the mean weight and variance of each color, and the variance of the sample means. Use a one-way ANOVA at the 0.05 significance level to test the null hypothesis that the different color M&M candies have the same mean weight.

4 groups Group x values

# 1 2 3 4

Red Orange Yellow Brown

1 0.905 0.735 0.883 0.696

2 0.890 0.895 0.769 0.859

3 0.942 0.865 0.859 0.855

4 0.878 0.864 0.784 0.806

5 0.966 0.852 0.824 0.840

Sum: 4.581 4.211 4.119 4.056

# of values: 5 5 5 5

Mean, xbi: 0.916 0.842 0.824 0.811

Variance: 0.0014 0.0038 0.0023 0.0046

Variance of sample means: 0.0022

WHICH OF THE FOLLOWING ANSWERS ARE CORRECT?

1. The test statistic F = 3.6 with a critical value of 4.1, so we fail to reject the null hypothesis of equal means.

2. The test statistic F = 3.6 with a critical value of 3.0, so we reject the null hypothesis of equal means.

3. The test statistic F = 3.6 with a critical value of 3.2, so we reject the null hypothesis of equal means.

4. The test statistic F = 2.9 with a critical value of 3.2, so we fail to reject the null hypothesis of equal means.
