Assignment:
Your task is to explore a theme that has piqued your interest, conduct scholarly research to deepen your understanding, and employ either or both critical nationalism and rhetoric/reality gap. The objective of this assignment is to demonstrate your critical thinking, research, and writing skills while contributing to the broader discourse in Canadian Studies.
The theme chosen is: Canadian identity and multiculturalism
Research Questions:
To guide your exploration, select one of the following research questions or propose one of your own related to a major theme in Canadian Studies covered in this course. Ensure that your research question is specific and well-defined.
1. How have Indigenous Peoples in Canada influenced the country's cultural identity and government policies?
2. What role has multiculturalism played in shaping Canadian society and identity?
3. How have environmental concerns and resource management policies impacted Canada's economic development and international standing?
4. To what extent has Canadian literature contributed to the national identity and cultural diversity of the country?
5. Analyze the impact of political events, such as Confederation, on the development of Canada as a nation.
Assignment Guidelines:
1. Select a Major Theme: Choose one of the major themes discussed in the course that you find most intriguing. Ensure that your theme is clearly defined and relevant to Canadian Studies. ( theme identified above)
2. Use Critical Nationalism and/or Identify the Rhetoric/Reality Gap: As we've done throughout this course, when answering your research question think on how to use critical nationalism in your answer, or identify and critique a rhetoric/reality gap.
3. Conduct Research: Utilize both course materials and additional scholarly sources obtained through the library. A minimum of five sources is expected (course material and outside sources combined). Make sure to evaluate the credibility of your sources and choose relevant academic articles, books, or essays.

5. Essay Structure: Your essay should follow the standard academic essay structure, including an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Ensure that your essay has a clear thesis statement that answers your research question.
6. Evaluation: You will be evaluated based on the depth of your research, the clarity of your writing, the strength of your argument, your ability to engage with course materials, and your mastery of the chosen citation style.
