Assignment:
Scenario: Endangered Species Conservation in San Francisco Bay Area, California
In the San Francisco Bay Area, rapid urbanization and the expansion of tech and housing developments have severely impacted the habitat of the Western Bumble Bee, an endangered pollinator essential to local ecosystems. The loss of open meadows and native plant species due to sprawling commercial and real estate projects in the East and South Bay areas has explicitly significantly reduced available food sources and nesting sites for the species. While some restoration efforts, such as those led by the Pollinator Partnership and local conservation projects, aim to reintroduce pollinator-friendly landscapes, progress has been hindered by limited community engagement and support from developers.
Students who select this scenario will analyze how habitat fragmentation and urban growth affect endangered pollinators and develop one of the following deliverables:
1. A strategy for integrating pollinator restoration into regional urban planning, agriculture, and residential landscaping
2. A community science campaign to monitor pollinator populations in the named areas
3. A local government program to incentivize pollinator habitat restoration on private lands
