Data Visualisation in Journalism

Assessment: Case Analysis Report

Assessment: Report

Description:

Students will write a case analysis report of 800 words on a data journalism story of their choosing. The report will identify the source of the data and analyse the data visualisation tools and newsgathering methods used. It will discuss the use of data in context and in balance, and raise any potential legal, ethical, social and practical implications of data use in the story. The submission must adhere to the report writing format. A digital link to the online story or PDF of the story must be included in the submission.

This assessment will be structured as a report (see Module: Writing a Report). However, the intention is to have students present this assessment following report structure rather than adhering to common requirements of reports such as recommendations, a title page and numbered sections (all of which are unnecessary for this assessment). The report should include a References section with 5 references to academic sources to indicate independent research. These references should be different to those included in lecture material.

Students will be assessed on the following criteria.

1. The task meets the requirements:

It is in report format, of 800 words, professionally written and presented (in Word document). The report is based on a data story of sufficient complexity to facilitate discussion of any legal, ethical, social and practical implications of data use in the story, and the use of data in context and in balance. A digital link to the story or PDF is provided in the report. (Note, if the story itself does not raise any legal, ethical, social or practical implications of data use, it should still be of sufficient complexity to allow discussion of these issues.) The student includes 5 references to academic sources.

2. Analysis of data use:

The report explains the data source or sources for the story and comments on their veracity and credibility, with reasoning. It then analyses any legal, ethical, social and practical implications of using this data, and whether the data is used in context and in balance. This analysis may draw on relevant quantitative research techniques where appropriate.

3. Analysis of data visualisation tools:

The report describes and explains data visualisation tools used in the story and assesses their appropriateness to the task of explaining the data. An example of a key data visualisation tool (graphic or screenshot) might be reproduced in the report to make a point.

4. Analysis of newsgathering techniques:

The report describes and explains the newsgathering techniques used in the story and addresses their appropriateness to the task of explaining the data. The student should assess how effectively data visualisation tools are used in conjunction with newsgathering techniques to develop the overall narrative. The discussion may also consider media relations and corporate communication where relevant.

5. Writing:

The student should demonstrate clear and concise writing in their report, with attention to style (readability), structure, authorial voice, spelling, punctuation and grammar.
