This assignment will assess the following learning outcomes: After completion of the module, the student should be able to:
1. Identify and critically analyse key national and international issues in Business Ethics.
2. Critically discuss the social and philosophical nature of ethics within a business context.
3. Critically examine the contexts and contemporary debates of responsible business.
ASSIGNMENT/COURSEWORK
Required Tasks:
1. Choose two (2) questions from among the given Contemporary Business Ethical Issues that could intellectually respond to the Modern Business Ethics.
2. Apply appropriate ethical concepts and theories with suitable examples for each question.
3. Answer each of the questions with 1,500 words.
4. Construct and organise ideas based on the required tasks in the marking criteria.
Questions to Answer:
1. Discuss comprehensively the factors that affect ethical behavior in the workplace which courd be a prominen case that causes the downfall or bankruptcy of a certain company. Give clear justification and-deffitfrine important ideas that supports your statements.
2. Choose a company here in Oman which has cones governmental laws, rights and
justice respectively. Apply necessary theories that could substantiate the discussion and specify clearly your insight about the issue.
3. What will you do when you caught a co-worker harassing another employee, or you saw a manager harassing or bullying a subordinate? What course of action should you do in terms of ethics policies and utilitarian standard of morality? Elaborate your ideas to express key points.
Guideline -
I. INTRODUCTION - Identification and description of the question and use in-text citation.
II. CONTENT and ANALYSIS
2.1. In-depth discussion of the chosen question with supporting ideas from the other experts relevant to Business Ethics which are logical and coherent in its structure.
2.2. Critical analysis of the ethical behavior with proof of evidences and substantial support of ideas which are varied of thoughts that would convince the responses of the topic.
2.3. Appropriate use of the in-text citation (from 2000 and up).
III. REFLECTIVE STATEMENT (200 words)
3.1 Develop clear and purposeful thoughts to bring out a new knowledge of learning based on the chosen question.
3.2. The write up is self-analysis and the discussion is geared toward a strong argument.
IV. CONCLUSION - (150 words)
Provide the summary of the analysis to substantiate the written answer. There should be organised and structured ideas to obtain the synthesis of thoughts.
V. REFERENCES Use 10 to 15 references from varied sources. The Harvard Referencing must be given out properly.Identifying and Investigating:
Step 1: Business ethics issues are reported upon regularly in the media. Conduct an on-going and thorough investigation of the incidents that have been reported on in the web/ newspapers/ television/ radio, since the start of the module.
Step 2: Choose 2 Areas of Business Ethical Concern to investigate and analyse. They may be concerning one company or more than one. Write a very brief outline of the topics and what interests you about them.
NB. In the allocated tutorial time you must negotiate with the module tutor to ensure that they are suitable - to be evidenced by a signature. Non-negotiated work may not be marked.
During the writing of your assignment - the following steps are suggested:
Step :1
Describe -Identify the facts:
- Briefly outline the case
- How did the situation come about?
- What are the key Issues?
- Who are the stakeholders?
- Whose rights are involved if any?
- Identify any duties - who has them?
- Identify any virtues, or precedents
Step 2
Discern - identify the ethical issues:
- What are the most significant issues (where there are more than one give no more than two)
- Are there conflicting interests, if so, which are the most important?
- Are there conflicting rights? Which carry the most weight?
- Are there any conflicts of duty, which should take precedence?
Step 3
Critique your case /scenario from a theoretical perspective (s)
- Consider the social and political role of business in society
- How does your chosen ethical theoretical perspective (s) apply to the case/scenario?
- What light do they shine upon potential outcomes/principles/duties/actions etc might their application entail/ suggest?
- If you are using 2 ethical theoretical perspectives for one case, do they suggest conflicting or similar outcomes/principles/duties/actions etc, might their application entail/ suggest?
