Purpose of assessment task
In submitting a video for this task, you will communicate professionally your knowledge of person- centred medication management and evidence-based practice to ensure quality and safe care.
Furthermore, this video will enable you to gain skills in using media to organise and communicate your ideas succinctly.
Topic background:
Many patients are prescribed a new medication during a period of hospitalisation. During this time, nurses are required to provide safe and quality care related to medication management.
Task Description:
Evaluate a case scenario and NIMC documentation and create a 5-minute video addressing concerns about digoxin administration in relation to the case.
Case scenario
It is 6th September at 0900 hours.
You are caring for Mr Joe Haldeman, aged 65 years. Mr Haldeman presented to the emergency department (ED) at 1400 hours yesterday with sudden onset of palpitations and severe dizziness. He has reported having diarrhoea for 3 days (his last bowel action was 1900 hrs 5th September). An ECG revealed atrial fibrillation (AF) at 158 bpm and he was placed on cardiac monitoring. He was commenced on a loading dose of digoxin (see NIMC). Mr Haldeman was given the first two doses of digoxin in the ED and arrived on your ward in a monitored bed at 0600 hours this morning. He remains in AF.
Mr Haldeman has a past history of hypertension (12 years), type 2 diabetes (10 years), and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS; 5 years). He is prescribed Diltiazem CD 180mg and Teltartan HCT 40/12.5 for his hypertension, Metformin XR 500 mg for his diabetes, and a probiotic for his IBS. Joe had a set of blood pathology taken this morning at 0800 hrs (see Blood Pathology chart for results).
Joe is currently reporting nausea and loss of appetite. His vital signs and BGL at 0830 hrs were:
HR - 86 bpm (irreg)
RR - 14 bpm SpO2 - 97% RA
BP - 108/70 mmHg Temp - 37.1ºC
BGL - 14.4 mmol/L
Assessment Task Instructions:
This assignment has THREE components:
1) Create a 5-minute video presentation addressing the task.
Your task: Inform the medical registrar regarding your concerns about administering the Digoxin.
Your video should commence as you introduce yourself to the medical registrar.
2) Script
You are required to upload a written version of your script in word doc format. This provides you with an opportunity to use Turnitin to check for any anomalies (e.g. plagiarism) prior to submission.
3) Reference list
A written reference list in word doc format, adhering to APA7 guidelines.
Presentation Requirements: Video Recording:
• You are required to wear Deakin uniform / professional attire. Present as if you were completing this assessment on clinical placement.
• Videos should not regularly ‘stop' and ‘start' filming. Consider the most appropriate location of your camera to ensure the marker has the best view of the medical conversation.
• Use professional language and effective communication for the target audience.
• Your video should be no shorter than 4 minutes 30 seconds and no longer than 5 minutes and 30 seconds. Videos will not be viewed / assessed past this time.
Written Script and Reference List:
• Written script and reference list font must be size 12 and in an accessible font style e.g. Times New Roman or Calibri.
• The written script should include in-text citations.
• The reference list is provided at the end of the script.
• Referencing must adhere to APA7 requirements.
