According to Forbes a trend that will be implemented by Gen Y and Gen Z will be an emphasis on being an empathetic leader. I found this to be interesting because I am within the Gen Y generation and do feel leaders should illustrate empathy to subordinates. Not stating that leaders should lead delicately but show compassion for employees and associates. “ Listening and responding skills outranked all others in producing the most successful leaders, according to a DDI study of more than 15,000 leaders in 18 countries released earlier this year” (Nick,2016). That was a statement from two years ago, it seems as though this trend is becoming more popular as these generations are increasing with age and getting to a leadership platform. It seems as though with having an empathic leader, work performance is increasing. Employees and associates feel more empowered and motivated. Companies are seeing the outcome of this trend and now are implementing empathy training for leaders. Leaders of the past were viewed as authoritarians; however successful leaders are becoming compassionate. Acquiring this form of leadership is becoming just as innovative as new technologies. Personally, I want an empathic leader, but also stern. The Devil wears Prada but also wants to make sure I am happy in my life and work environment. I would personally perform better knowing I work for someone who cares for their employees. You must care for your employees if you care for your business.
Just like with new technologies that are entering the workplace, new leaders are entering this work place as well. Employees are becoming more progressive and are motivated by new trends of leadership. “ The best leaders have an unparalleled work ethic and the determination to overcome any obstacle in their way, while also understanding they need to interact and communicate with their team like human beings. You can't be a good leader without authentic and genuine human interaction” (Long,2018). Therefore, to be an effective leader you have to acquire people skills. Having the ability to be straightforward and listening to employees and associates is becoming a required attribute to being an effective leader.
