The "Amusing Spiderguy" (mass m = 60 kg) hangs from his web, which is attached to a thin, horizontal beam (mass M = 100 kg). (See illustration below.) One end of the beam is attached to the side of a building by a hinge that can freely rotate, and the other end is secured by a cable that makes an angle θ = 60?to the beam. The beam's length L = 6.0 m, and Spiderguy hangs a horizontal distance x = 2.0 m from the building. (a) Determine the tension in the cable attached to the right end of the beam and (b) the x- and y-components of the force of the hinge on the beam. The cable affixed to the right side of the beam then snaps, so the beam begins to rotate about the hinge on its left side. (c) Find the downward acceleration of Spiderguy just after the cable snaps and (d) the tension in Spiderguy's web, also, just after the cable snaps. Take care identifying the forces acting on the beam and the forces acting on Spiderguy just after the cable snaps. Also be careful relating the acceleration of Spiderguy to the angular acceleration of the beam. The moment of inertia of a stick rotating about its end is (1/3)ML2.
