Audience Participation and Interaction
Assessment: Essay
Students must write a 1500 word (not including the reference list) academic paper presenting and critiquing research on an example of media audiencing practice. The aim of this piece of assessment is to demonstrate your understanding of concepts from the course and to apply these to an example of a media audiencing (ideally that you yourself have participated in).
Topics for this essay will be workshopped in tutorials. You will be expected to discuss, negotiate, and lodge an essay plan (a one-page outline, worth 5%) with your tutor and to keep her/him up to date with any challenges to your progress. If you need additional support in structuring your academic paper, you may refer to essay writing and report writing help.
HINTS
scope potential topics by using Google Scholar to assess the volume and range of audience research available on that topic
you are welcome to include non-academic sources, but remember you need to critically assess all material you use
feel free to narrow / broaden your topic to provide a reasonable number of sources to discuss
talk to your tutor about ways to work through this material
provide a one-page outline of your essay plan
Marking criteria
Your Essay will be graded on the following:
Approved essay plan, negotiated with the tutor
Evidence of detailed research and the application of ideas relevant to the course
You need to develop arguments related to the course, and the application of these to a specific example of audiencing practice. Audience concepts need to be debated in a detailed, critical and/or original way. A higher grade will be awarded for those essays which are well-written, with points fully elaborated, with clear accurate and detailed information used to support your arguments, and which demonstrates evidence of high-quality research. Understanding audience analysis can also help when evaluating audience-related concepts discussed in the course.
NOTE: You are permitted to use AI tools to help you identify research sources, but not in structuring or writing the content of your essay. Any AI assistance must for cited. (And please note that the TurnItIn function in Canvas now deploys an AI detection tool).
Organisation and structure
Aim for an excellent level of organisation, with clear and effective introduction and conclusion, and logical sequencing of paragraphs to build your argument. You may also find guidance on business communication useful for improving the clarity and organisation of academic writing.
