A robot is used in a seam welding process. The robot is programmed so that it tracks the product on an overhead conveyor and welds the seam. The tolerance of the deviations of the weld from the center of the seam is ? 0.005 in. Measurements of deviation from 10 welded pieces were taken and recorded as following: 0.003 0.002 0.005 -0.004 -0.003 -0.002 0.003 0.005 -0.004 -0.003 A new robot guidance system is introduced to increase the quality of the welded seams. The system, a vision device, guides the robot along the seam rather than using the original defined programmed points along the seam. Using this new system, 10 more measurements of deviations were collected: 0.001 -0.002 0.001 0.001 -0.003 0.002 0.001 0.001 -0.002 0.001 Using the Taguchi’s quality loss function concept, determine the quality levels before and after the introduction of the new guidance system. Is this new guidance system effective in improving the quality of the seam welding process?
