A Columbia Journalism Review study found that 90% of news stories originated or were influenced by PR professionals. If you consider that the average newspaper is 70% advertising and 30% editorial content, one begins to wonder what exactly you're buying.

Take a look at today's local paper and see if you can identify stories that were somehow initiated or influenced by PR. To help you, consider the following: Were quotes from press releases and spokespeople, or were they directly from people important to the story? Was the story in the newspaper because of a planned public relations event or news conference? Was information "intentionally leaked" from "anonymous" sources close to the situation?
