But before we can use PN junction as a rectifying device we are required to firstly bias the junction, that is connect a voltage potential across it. On the voltage axis above, "Reverse Bias" refers to the external voltage potential which increases the potential barrier. An external voltage which decreases potential barrier is said to act in the "Forward Bias" direction.

There  are  2  operating  regions  and  3  possible  "biasing"  conditions  for  standard Junction Diode and these are:

1. Zero Bias - In this no external voltage potential is applied to PN-junction.

2. Reverse Bias - Hear the voltage potential is connected negative, to the P-type material and positive, to the N-type material across diode which has the effect of Increasing PN-junction width.

3. Forward Bias - Hear the voltage potential is connected positive, to the P-type material and negative, to the N-type material across the diode which has the effect of Decreasing PN-junction width.
