Managerial competencies are "sets of knowledge, skills, behaviors, and attitudes that a person needs to be effective in a wide range of managerial jobs and various types of organisations" Of particular importance are strategic skills which relates to setting of key objectives based on - (Hellriegel et al 2004) an understanding of what is happening inside and outside the organizations; task related skills which encompass functional and operational competencies which enables you to define the best approach to achieving objectives, given the resources available; people related skills which enable you to achieve objectives through and with others and self-management skills which enables you to take responsibility for your life at work and beyond.
