Hormonal control of fluid balance: When water intake is insufficient or water loss is excessive, the kidneys compensate by conserving water and excreting more concentrated urine. The renal tubules increase water reabsorption in response to the hormonal action of ADH (anti-diuretic hormone) released by the pituitary glands under the stimulation of the hypothalamus, and this helps to restore the blood volume. Water balance is critical in maintaining the blood volume, which in turn influences blood pressure.
