In this module, we learned about the elements of a business's environment and its design. The purpose of this discussion is to define the elements of a business's environment, explore the options available for structural design, and identify emerging types of organizational design. As a manager, you are part of the organizational design and have influence in how the work gets done.
You will use your focus company to help you complete this assessment. This same corporation will be used in several other modules throughout the course. Details on the focus area for each assessment that utilizes this company can be reviewed in the folder entitled "Focus Company" located at the top of the Learning Modules Section.
Go to your company's website and locate the organizational chart. If an organizational chart is not available, you may choose to visit the Official Board website and use an organizational chart located there. Also, make sure to watch the videos from the module entitled Working at Google Zurich - Luuk: Software Engineer (1 min 39 sec; transcript) and Building a Flat Business Explained (9 min 58 sec; transcript) for further perspective on corporate organization structure and design. This will help you answer the following questions.
In this discussion, your goal is to explore the organizational structure of your focus company and identify possible emerging designs that could improve their structure.
Summarize the following items in your post:
- Based on organizational structure, describe what you believe are some of the elements of the company's organizational environment. Elements may include job specialization, departmentalization, reporting relationships, etc. Which of these are used most effectively? Support your response.
- What are the advantages and disadvantages of the company's organizational structure? Considering the basic elements of organizing a business, describe two or more alternative ways the company might structure their business which you feel may improve the business and explain why.
- In this module, you read about three emerging forms of business including the virtual, team, and learning business. Which emerging form of business design is used at or could be used at this company? Support your response.
