Stress Distribution in Beams:

In  previous Unit , we studied about the bending stress and the practical applications of the bending stress, design for bending and the determination of load bearing capacity of a beam of given cross-section.

In this unit, we are going to study regarding section modulus, shear stress distribution and flitched beams in beams of several cross-section. We shall also study regarding the normal force on a partial beam section and the moment of the normal force regarding the neutral axis of the beam.

Objectives

After studying this unit, you should be able to

  • Find out the section modulus for beams of various cross-section,
  • analyse the partial beam section,
  • determine the normal force on a partial beam section and the moment of the normal force around the neutral axis of the beam,
  • described flitched beams and its equivalent section, and
  • Appraise the shear stress distribution in beams of sevearl cross-section.
