Field

The aim of the field in a DC machine is to gives a magnetic field for producing either a voltage (generator) or a torque (motor) (refer to Figure). A field in a DC machine is produced through either a permanent magnet or an electromagnet.  Generally, electromagnets are used since they have an increased magnetic strength, and the magnetic strength is more simply varied using external devices.  Within Figure, the field is given through the stator.
