Broad guiding principle for fixing the dimensions of foundation is given and different types of foundations are described in this chapter.
DIMENSIONS OF FOUNDATION
Guidelines for minimum dimensions are following:
(1) Depth of Foundation: For all types of foundations minimum depth needed is calculated by using Rankine's Formula:
Where p is stand for safe bearing capacity of soil
w is stand for unit weight of soil
? is stand for angle of repose of soil.
However it is not less than 0.9 m in any case. Finding safe bearing of the soil is an expert's job, and after conducting tests in field or in Laboratories it is found. However common values for common soils are listed in given table
(2) Width of Foundation: Width of wall foundations or size of column footing is resolute by first calculating the expected load and then dividing it with SBC. So,
