DISASTER MITIGATION

Disaster mitigation means minimizing the painfulness due to disaster. The people face the following problems after the disaster:

  1.   when required Food is not available
  2.   Shelters are damaged completely or partially
  3.   Diseases spread.
  4.   Drinking water shortage is felt.
  5.   Communication systems are affected.

The following steps are to be taken to ease the misery of the affected people:

  1.   Extend manpower, financial and material assistance to repair/build their houses.
  2.   Temporary Provide accommodation with sanitary, water supply and electricity facilities.
  3.   Continue to listen to warning bulleting & keep in touch with local officials.
  4.   Store up at least 7 day stock of essential food articles, water and medicines supply during the expected period of cyclones   and floods.
  5.   Remove smashed and decayed parts of trees to make them resist wind and reduce the potential for damage.
  6.   Be ready to evacuate people to places of safety when advised.
  7.   In containers keep valuables and documents which cannot be damaged by water.
  8.   Before cyclone season begin carry out all essential repairs to the building.
  9.   During cyclone warning period Fishermen are advised not to venture into the sea.
  10.   Talk to children and described about cyclone/floor. Remain calm.
  11.   Do not touch power lines.
  12.   Avoid taking shelter near old and damaged building or near trees.
