In any data model, it is significant to distinguish among the description of the database and the database itself the description of a database is known as database schema, that is specified during database design and is not expected to change often. The actual data in a database is database itself. May change quite frequently.

The schema is sometimes is known as the intension, and a database state is known as an extension of the schema.
