Why was regional trade important in 1400, History

Hi I am reading the text The origin of the modern world by Robert Marks and one of the questions I am suppose to answer within the text is: "Why was regional trade important in 1400? Why is important to know that Asia was the center of this trading world?" This is my history text; however, I think if anyone knows history very well and can just give me a general answer then that would help me out too. Thanks
