Why is segmented paging important, Computer Engineering

Assignment Help:

Why is segmented paging important (as compared to a paging system)?

Paging can be super-imposed upon a segment oriented addressing mechanism to acquire efficient use of the memory. It is a clever scheme along with advantages of both paging and also segmentation. In this scheme each segment would consist of a descriptor with its pages known. Therefore we have to now utilize three sets of offsets. Initially, a segment offset helps to recognize the set of pages. Next, inside the consequent page table for the segment, we require to identify the exact page table. It is done by using the page-table part of the virtual address. One time the exact page has been known, the offset is used to acquire main memory address reference. The last address resolution is exactly similar as in paging.
