Why is quantum mechanics important?

Quantum mechanics is important to understand the behavior of systems at atomic length scales and duration smaller. For illustration, when Newtonian mechanics governed the workings of an atom, electrons would quickly travel in the direction of and collide along with the nucleus, making stable atoms not possible. Nonetheless, in the natural world the electrons normally stay put in an unknown orbital path near the nucleus, defying classical electromagnetism.
