Why is meiosis important for the maintenance, Biology

Assignment Help:

Why is meiosis important for the maintenance of the normal quantity of chromosomes of a species with sexual reproduction?

A reduction to a half of the maximum normal quantity of chromosomes is mandatory in some phase of the life cycle of a species that reproduces sexually. If that could not occur in every generation, whenever a zygote is created by fusion of gametes there would be duplication in the quantity of chromosomes in a geometric progression.
