Why do financial managers calculate the marginal tax rate?

Financial managers make use of marginal tax rates to estimate the future after-tax cash flows from investments. As they are interested in how much of the next dollar earned from new investments will must be paid in taxes, they use the marginal tax rate (rather than the average tax rate) to compute the tax liability.
