The resistance of the strain gauges is usually measured with a Wheatstone bridge. All bridges have balancing circuits which can be apex or parallel. Both methods are equivalent.
We will often omit the balancing circuit from the diagrams for clarity. The resistors R1 - R4 can be different combinations of resistors, active and dummy strain gauges depending on the kind of strain to be measured.
