The notion of brain plasticity has been of interest to researchers and clinicians alike for decades. The outcome of injury is the result of the underlying plastic potential of the brain and varies with the neurodevelopmental stage at the time of insult, the type of lesion, the severity of the lesion, the behaviour being measured, the range of the scores of the individual at assessment, and other factors. It has been proposed that the brain modifies itself through change at the synapse, that is, by alterations in the axon terminal, spine density, dendritic behavioural, or structure of the existing synapse.
