Great strides have been made in the last 20 years to provide greater accessibility for people who have physical disabilities. As shown in the image above, kitchens can be designed to provide counters that are at convenient heights, under-counter spaces to allow wheelchair clearance, and cabinet configurations that allow contents to be within reach of a seated person. Unfortunately, these design conveniences are largely done on a custom basis and are not necessarily affordable for individual homeowners, schools, and businesses. One alternative is to provide added mobility for the person in existing, poorly accessible environments. You are to design a modified mobility device that provides the functions that a typical wheelchair does, but can lift the occupant to an upright position safely, providing access to shelving and cabinets.
