What is a security?

Securities are claims on financial assets.  They can be illustrated as "claim checks" which give their owners the right to receive funds in the future.  Securities are traded in both of the money and capital markets. Money market securities involve negotiable certificates of deposit, Treasury bills, commercial paper, and banker's acceptances. Capital market securities involve bonds and stock.
