Q. What is a Negative Number?

Ans.

Negative numbers are very important in mathematics. We say that positive and negative numbers are opposites of one another.

Here are some examples that will help illustrate positives and negatives for you. Can you see which might be the positive, and which might be the negative?

Example: If you have $5 in your pocket, what would be the opposite of this?

Well, the opposite of having $5 in your pocket would be that you owe somebody $5.
