Glossary of Literary Techniques

Below is a list of literary techniques. It's not terribly important to memorize these terms--what is important is understanding what they can do. For example, Emerson uses a striking metaphor in his essay Nature: when he is outdoors, he says, "I become a transparent eyeball." Now, it isn't enough to point to that part of the text and say "Aha! A metaphor!" The important thing is to explain what that metaphor does. How, for instance, does Emerson's metaphor help us understand the concept of spirituality in Nature?

2. Be aware that terms can overlap: the transparent eyeball is not only a metaphor, but it also creates a pretty amazing image.

3. The "interpretive hints" column suggests some ways that you could begin developing an interpretation of the example. These suggestions are not the only ways that you could proceed, nor are they complete interpretations.

4. You can use these terms to discuss any kind of writing--poetry or prose.
