View of the Cell Used By Jobs - Process Design

This figure gives a close-up view of the cell used by Jobs 1 and 2. Notice that neither of the jobs uses all of the processes in the cell. In setting up cells it is may be found that a process that has low utilisation is required by more than one cell; thought must then be given to whether or not it should be duplicated.

Service operations which exhibit some of the cell layout's attributes include: car tyre/exhaust/battery replacement outlets, island-layout self-service cafeterias. Cells may take various configurations, but the U-shape depicted in this figure is commonly used where cell operators move from process to process; this layout reduces the distances they have to move.
