Valve clearance and tappet adjustment, Mechanical Engineering

Assignment Help:

Valve Clearance and Tappet Adjustment: Like all metal components the valve expands on heating. Hence the valve clearance is set so that on expansion there is room for the valve to expand. Remember if the valve clearance is less or more it would lead quick or late opening and closing of valves giving a host of other problems.

STEPS

  • Let the engine cool down before adjusting the valve clearance.
  • Remove the left crankcase cover and cylinder head left cover.
  • Align the 'T' mark of the flywheel with the index mark on the crankcase turning it anticlockwise.
  • Simultaneously the 'O' mark on the camshaft sprocket should align with the index mark on the cylinder head.
  • Both valves are closed in this position.
  • Remove the tappet adjusting hole caps.
  • Adjust both the valves with the feeler gauge of 0.05 mm.
  • Adjust the tappet with the recommended special tool.
  • Check the valve clearance. A 0.06 mm feeler gauge should not slide inside the valve clearance.
  • Replace the tappet cover O-ring if necessary and install the tappet cover.
  • Install the cylinder head side cover and left crankcase cover.

 Important points to remember:

  • Check the valve clearance with a 0.06 mm feeler gauge.
  • "T" mark and index mark on the crankcase and simultaneously "O" mark and index mark on cylinder head must be aligned properly.
