As far as the course of Robert Matthews and Elijah Pierson's lives was concerned, the Revolution might as well not have happened"

What does it mean by the Revolution might as well not have happened??

I understand that the book has nothing to do with American revolution. but I am not sure what the last sentence is trying to say. does it mean that thoses characters has nothing to do with revolution? what does that mean??? Help!!
