The quality of instruction within a school in dependent on the retention and recruitment of bright and qualified teachers. Currently, however, principals have been faced with an increasing number of bright, well-qualified new teachers leaving the profession. This scenario shows major challenges for school principals. As the instructional leaders of their schools, the principal is ultimately liable for overcoming barriers that interfere with the retention of new teachers. Therefore, the principal must possess the acumen to nurture a working environment that increases the likelihood of retaining and recruiting high quality teachers. Much research exists as to what factors influence teacher retention and attrition. Personal factors, professional qualifications, working conditions and work rewards have a direct influence on a new teacher's decision to either stay or leave the teaching profession. Little evidence, thus, exists as to the degree of influence these factors have on new teacher's propensity to stay in or leave the teaching profession.
The purpose of this study is to discover how new teacher perceptions of the variables related to retention affect their decision to remain in the teaching profession. This study will employ a non-experimental design. High school teachers with three years or less teaching experience will be surveyed. The study is provided by the following questions: What factors do new teachers report as important in their decision to stay or leave the teaching profession? How do these factors vary and under what conditions?
