Show the ranges of port numbers, Computer Engineering

Assignment Help:

Q. Show the ranges of Port numbers?

Port numbers are divided into three ranges:

  • Well-known ports are those from 0 through 1,023.
  • Registered ports are those from 1,024 through 49,151.
  • Dynamic and private ports are those from 49,152 through 65,535.

Well-known ports, those ranging from 0 through 1,023 are where most common services on Internet are residing. These ports are assigned and controlled by Internet Assigned Number Authority (IANA) and on most systems can be used only by system processes (root) or by programs executed by privileged users.
