Show the application of concrete crash barriers, Civil Engineering

Assignment Help:

Q. Show the application of Concrete crash barriers?

Concrete crash barriers aren't considered as the best barrier design due to the following reasons when compared with flexible barriers:

(i)  Concrete barriers possess rough surface that, when impacted by moving vehicles, tend to cause significant damage to the vehicles.

(ii) Because concrete is a rigid material and deceleration of collided vehicles is relatively large when compared with flexible barriers.

Though concrete crash barriers have particular application in locations where deflection of barriers isn't allowed. For example in the central divider of a carriageway, if flexible barriers are adopted and vehicles crush into the barriers, deformation resulting from the hitting of vehicles will result in an intrusion to the adjacent carriageway. This is undesirable since this can trigger further collisions in the adjacent carriageway and therefore rigid barriers such as concrete crash barriers must be adopted in this scenario.
