RAILWAYS:

Railway transport is one of the important modes of transport in India. Its technology is based on the traction of a group of wagons or coaches over a fixed track, consisting of two steel rails. The traction is provided by the locomotive. The design, construction and maintenance of the track is done by Civil Engineers.

Objectives

After studying this unit, you should be able to

  • describe the various components of the railway track and their function,
  • explain gauge, rail section, sleeper, ballast, fastenings, embankment, standards for alignment and grade, and
  • understand the points and crossings.
