The written assignment for this module requires that you read chapters 7-9 in the Champion text (Probation, Parole and Community Corrections) and conduct Internet and library research on the topic of the future of parole in the United States. In developing this essay, you should include a discussion of the goals and the primary and latent functions of parole; the rationale for the shift from guidelines- based sentencing to determinate sentencing; the effectiveness of parole programs including a discussion of the impact of gangs on program effectiveness; and finally, the public and political pressures which impact the future of parole. Additional references, as well as the assigned text materials, should be used in developing this work. The essay should be 4-6 pages in length.
