Q. Find Probability of tossing a head with the dime?

List the sample space, and find n(S), for the outcomes of tossing a nickel followed by a dime. What is the probability of tossing a head with the dime?

Solution: This example is more complicated than example 1. Use a tree diagram to list the possibilities.

Notice that there are four branches to the tree and each branch shows a possible outcome. We can also list the possibilities like this:

S = {(H, H), (H, T), (T, H), (T, T)}

n(S) = 4

Let A be the event of tossing a head with the dime. Then A = {(H, H), (T, H)} and n(A) = 2.
