Provide a detailed description of the nociceptive system and describe its normal
function. The description should include peripheral and central (spinal cord and
brain) components and both facilitatory and inhibitory modulatory pathways.
Include in your description the names of neurons, neurotransmitters, pathways, and
brainstem/cortical regions that are involved in nociception. You should include a
brief description of how the system changes when activated by nociceptive stimuli.
